a call to action – to unplug & rewild
Once upon a time, childhood was measured in scraped knees, muddy boots, and the number of frogs almost – but not quite – caught. Fast forward to today, and many of those wild adventures have been traded for glowing rectangles and endless scrolling.
We get it. Screens are everywhere. They’re convenient, captivating, and sometimes even educational. But research is clear, too much screen time is linked to rising anxiety, shorter attention spans, disrupted sleep, and reduced social skills. Meanwhile, time spent outdoors, digging, building and exploring boosts creativity, strengthens resilience, nurtures wellbeing, and even improves academic outcomes.
At Lobethal Lutheran School, we believe that healthy children limit screen use. We also believe that nature play isn’t just fun – it’s essential. Through our Beyond Outdoor Learning program, we’ve seen firsthand how time in nature transforms children. Kids who climb trees, build shelters, and explore the bush aren’t just playing they’re growing.
Earlier this year, we partnered with Encounter Youth to design sessions that help students manage screen time. The message from parents was loud and clear – We need help.
Now, with the December 10 social media ban for under-16s fast approaching, and mounting research about the dangers of excessive screen use, families are asking:
“What do we do next?”
We believe this moment is a gift.
A chance to reset.
A chance to reclaim childhood.
That’s why we’ve created From Screen Green – a free downloadable book packed with simple, joyful nature based activities designed to help kids unplug and reconnect with the world around them.
This school holidays, we encourage all families to build new habits, explore the outdoors and create lasting memories.
We want to be part of the change.
We want to help families move from screen time to green time.
We want to rewild the holidays.
