The Beyond Outdoor Learning program began with a question – “How could we bring the joy, energy, and engagement of outdoor play into our classrooms?”
Like many schools, we had noticed a concerning trend in student wellbeing and academic outcomes. As we looked out the window at happy, curious children immersed in nature, the answer became clear—not by bringing the outdoors in, but by taking the classroom outside.
What followed was a transformative journey. Rooted in research and inspired by forest school philosophies, we designed a structured curriculum that would weave wellbeing, forest skills, and key dispositions into a seamless learning experience. Our goal? To foster not just knowledge, but resilience, collaboration, persistence, mindfulness, and stewardship.

Where It All Began
Our program started with six core forest skills: woodcraft, building, knot-tying, fire-making, environmental awareness, and clay work. Each was paired with intentional lessons in wellbeing and emotional growth. The blend of structured tasks and unstructured play has produced remarkable outcomes—improved learning, increased confidence, and stronger social connections.

A Curriculum of Dispositions
Every Beyond lesson is built around key dispositions. We gradually increase the complexity of tasks to help learners develop not only technical skills but the mindset to navigate life’s challenges with creativity, courage, and compassion.
Our Four Key Understandings:
- Outdoor Learning is Essential
The natural world sparks curiosity, deep thinking, and a strong sense of connection. Whether on a bush block or school oval, learning outside enhances cognitive, physical, and emotional development through exploration, hands-on discovery, and open-ended play. - Embrace Risky Challenges
Forest skills involve healthy risk-taking—from building shelters to handling tools and fire safely. These activities teach life skills, build resilience, and empower learners to approach challenges with confidence and grit. - Honour Nature Play
Nature play fosters creativity, collaboration, and emotional expression. We protect unstructured time so learners can imagine, cooperate, and discover freely. Emotional intelligence and a sense of wonder grow here. - Develop Dispositions
At the heart of Beyond lies the intentional cultivation of dispositions. These traits are interwoven into every lesson, helping children become adaptable, thoughtful, and connected citizens of the world.
Outdoor Learning Can Happen Anywhere
A school oval, a quiet corner of the yard, or a nearby creek—all can become meaningful outdoor classrooms. School grounds are often the best place to start: they’re accessible, familiar, and easy to manage. But we’ve found magic in venturing beyond the gates, too. Bush blocks and beaches add a sense of adventure that ignites wonder and deepens engagement.

Time Matters
Longer, more frequent sessions are more effective. One to two hours allows time for deep exploration, social development, and immersive learning. Repeated exposure builds routine and a deeper connection to place.
Weather-Ready Learners
We prioritise comfort and safety by dressing for the conditions: cotton and hats in summer, thermals and waterproofs in winter. Our learners wear boots and jackets, and we embrace the messiness—mud, grass stains, and all—as signs of active learning and joyful engagement.
Getting Started: Tips from Our Journey
- Just Have a Go: Start small. Choose easy, low-prep activities and build consistent routines.
- Be Ready for Anything: Turn nerves into thoughtful preparation. Set realistic expectations.
- Walk the Boundary: Know your space—where to gather, where to shelter, where noise is okay.
Winning Hearts and Minds
Change can be daunting, and not everyone will be on board at first. Sceptics can become your biggest supporters when you share stories, show evidence, and involve them in the process. We hosted a parent incursion and received fantastic feedback.
Addressing Concerns
Some children are hesitant at first. Take the time to listen and adjust. Show parents how safety is prioritised, how lessons align with the curriculum, and how every experience is backed by thoughtful planning and risk-benefit assessments.

Embrace the Journey
Our program has evolved over four years and continues to grow. Just like a sapling becoming an oak, real change takes time, care, and commitment. Outdoor learning is not a trend—it’s a return to what children need most: connection, curiosity, and the courage to explore the world around them.
Beyond is more than a program—it’s a movement. We hope this blog inspires you to step outside and begin your own journey.
